To simulate the underground in 3D, parametric and nonparametric spatial statistics techniques were developed over the last 50 years in the geosciences (e.g. Communian et al. 2012). These methods provide results, but they are slow and may produce artefacts. In computer vision, with the recent boom of virtual reality, a large set of new texture synthesis methods were developped. A comparison of both domains show many similarities (Mariethoz and Lefevbre, 2014).
