With the continuous downscaling of CMOS technologies, reliability is more and more becoming a major bottleneck from a technology point of view. The main reasons are the increased electric fields and power densities reaching the limits that can be allowed for reliable operation. Moreover, the introduction of novel architectures and materials, to continue performance scaling, which have unknown reliability behavior or introduce new degradation mechanisms. These degradation mechanisms are, however, an inevitable reality of real-world CMOS devices and introduces a significant design challenge. The corresponding reliability issues are mainly mitigated by guard-banding after technology optimization. This leads to excessive design margins and a sub-optical design and technology choice.
In this Postdoc we aim to change the paradigm of design and technology co-optimization (DTCO) to enable large power and performance gains needed for future scaled CMOS technology beyond 7nm. It will involve studying the reliability and variability of advanced devices, such as FinFET and nanowires. Incorporating variability and reliability impact in an early design stage by exploring device and circuit topologies. Developing a novel methodology to incorporate reliability in the DTCO loop. You will work in a team of digital circuit designers and interact regularly with device engineers and researchers that address variability and reliability aspects
