The ORSTAT research group of the Faculty of Economics and Business, KU Leuven (Belgium) has a vacancy for a PhD student position in Statistics and Data Science. We are looking for a full-time PhD student to do research on robust statistical methods under the supervision of prof. Christophe Croux of ORSTAT, and prof. Stefan van Aelst and Mia Hubert from the department of Mathematics, division of Statistics and Data Science. Research focusses on developing robust statistical methodology, to study properties of the methods both numerically and mathematically, and to provide algorithms and applications.
The PhD candidate will work on the project “Robust statistical methods for improved prediction and anomaly detection”. Almost all real data deviate from the ideal assumptions underlying statistical models. An intrinsic problem is the occurrence of outliers or anomalies in real data. Robust statistical methods have proven to be a very powerful approach to reliably analyze such real data and provide accurate outlier detection. The objective of the PhD thesis is to develop innovative robust statistical methods for modern complex data, such as high dimensional time series and tensors. Focus is on prediction and forecasting.
