The Thermal Engineering Laboratory (LUT University) and Group of Energy Conversion Systems (Politecnico di Milano) are looking for a junior researcher in energy process modelling. The position is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Finland), which has awarded LUT University funding for a non-EU/EEA citizen relocating to Finland to conduct his/her doctoral studies.

At the LUT School of Energy Systems (LES), the Department of Energy Technology is responsible especially for research and education in energy conversion processes in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, thermal engineering, and reactor physics. The department’s key research areas include bioenergy, nuclear engineering, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics processes. In the changing energy industry, the emphasis is on low-carbon, energy-efficient processes and equipment. The research in the Thermal Engineering Laboratory involves energy system modelling and multiphase reactive processes – particularly the modelling of fluidized bed applications. The open position is located in the Thermal Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Energy Technology in Lappeenranta, Finland, and includes at least a one-year research visit to POLIMI (Politecnico di Milano).

The job focuses on novel biomass-to-X conversion processes and performing techno-economic analyses of the production of carbon-neutral and carbon-negative bio-products and bio-fuels. The aim is to develop numerical modelling tools for advanced processes, including biomass-to-X systems with integrated green hydrogen production and carbon capture and storage. Both unit operations and coupled processes are under investigation. Previous experience and knowledge of energy process modelling – in particular, experience in the use of numerical process modelling tools – are considered to be to the applicant’s advantage.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree or the equivalent in a relevant field (e.g. energy, thermal, or process engineering) and the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e. four years).  An employment contract can be concluded only if the applicant obtains the right to pursue doctoral studies at LUT University. The selected applicant is also required to apply for admission to the doctoral programme and a doctoral degree study right at POLIMI. The doctoral studies will be jointly supervised by LUT and POLIMI supervisors with the aim to complete a doctoral degree at both universities.

The employment will start as soon as possible with a one-year term including a six-month trial period, and it can be extended for another three years provided that the studies have progressed satisfactorily. The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical annual gross starting salary for a junior researcher is around 30 420 euros (plus a holiday bonus).
