We seek a PhD researcher for a research project on identifying and isolating microorganisms that utilize rare earth elements. This role offers a chance to advance your scientific career under the mentorship of leading experts in the field.
The ICE-FISHING project focuses on the identification and targeted isolation of novel rare earth elements (REE)-utilizing micro-organims. As part of this project, the applicant will perform data mining to identify potential REE dependent enzymes in culture collections and environmental samples based on existing genome and metagenome data, respectively. Identification of potential enzymes will be followed by structural modelling of the predicted proteins, identification of molecular targets for fluorescence-in-situ-hybridization (FISH) probes in genomes and metagenomes and subsequent probe design as well as testing and application of the designed probes. Moreover, the applicant will participate in field expeditions to retrieve starting material for generation of additional metagenomes and targeted culturing of microbes.
Our expectations of the applicant
The position requires MSc degree in bioinformatics, microbiology, genetics or a related field. The candidate should have in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in analysis of metagenomics data with high performance computing. Basic understanding of microbial ecology and microbial metabolism as well as the genes involved are also required. The successful candidate should possess excellent co-operational and communication skills and excellent skills in oral and written English. We also expect the applicant to have the capacity for self-initiated and independent work. Experience in design and testing of fluorescence in-situ hybridization probes and knowledge on computational programs focusing on protein folding are considered as advantages, as well as experience in field work, sampling and molecular laboratory work.
