The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

Within the Horizon Europe-funded research project TipESM, we are trying to understand climate tipping points in the Earth system, including their impact on ecosystems and society. Within the project, WSL’s role is to detect and evaluate tipping points in mountain ecosystems. For that purpose, the Dynamic Macroecology group in the Land Change Science research unit is looking, for the duration of 2 years, for a

PostDoc in Tipping points in mountain ecosystems 80-100% (f/m/d)


The position is embedded into a large, collaborative project (https://www.tipesm.eu/) to which your contribution will be the identification of tipping points in mountain ecosystems globally, with a specific focus on biodiversity. For that you will analyze large datasets of climate change impact models that have been prepared for the Intersectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP), and various other sources.

You hold a PhD degree in Macroecology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Climate Science, or a related field, and you already have a proven track record in researching tipping points in ecosystems, particularly in mountain ecosystems. The role requires expertise in handling and analyzing large geoscientific datasets, as well as previous experience in utilizing climate impact model output.
Proficiency in Python and R is a necessity for this position, along with strong skills in computing, data science, and/or AI, which would be considered advantageous. You should demonstrate a capacity for writing high impact scientific papers, possess ambition, creativity, and high motivation. A proficiency in English is essential. In addition, you should be accustomed to maintaining a high standard of independent, structured, and meticulous work. The position involves active collaboration across scientific disciplines within an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers.
