The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) jointly invite applications for the position of

Professor

in » Political Economy of Climate Policy «

to begin as soon as possible. The position is a tenured W3 position (Associate or Full Professor).

Scientific Environment

The professorship will be assigned to the Department of Governance at the TUM School of Social Sciences & Technology (SOT). It will be co-heading PIK´s FutureLab CERES, located in Potsdam, until the end of 2031.

The TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology (SOT) brings together an international community of researchers and educators from the fields of governance, educational science, and science & technology studies. It enhances the role of social sciences through interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach as an integral part of TUM’s commitment to Human-Centered Engineering.

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), a member of the Leibniz Association, advances the scientific frontier on interdisciplinary climate impact research for global sustainability and contributes knowledge and solutions for a safe and just climate future. With its roughly 400 staff from all over the world, PIK combines research across disciplines and scales with solution orientation, emphasizing that societal relevance is based on scientific excellence.

With this professorship, the hosting institutions seek to combine political and economic analysis of climate and resource policy to explore the economic context in which policy operates and to bring political and normative considerations on inclusive wealth governance and sustainability into economics.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include research and teaching as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. The successful candidate will be co-heading PIK´s CERES FutureLab on Political Economy until the end of 2031, thus leading a team of postdoctoral and doctoral researchers. Teaching responsibilities at TUM include courses in the university’s bachelor’s and master’s programs but are reduced to two hours during the stay at PIK. Candidates are expected to advance the understanding of the role of global commons and inclusive wealth in climate policy, identify key political and economic barriers to effective policy implementation, and advance policy advice by assessing solutions and pathways to achieve political targets. We also expect the professorship to actively build bridges between PIK and TUM, for instance, through public engagement and outreach activities in the context of the TUM Think Tank.

Qualifications

We seek to appoint an expert in the research area of political economy with a focus on climate policy and quantitative research. Candidates should have demonstrated excellent achievements in research and teaching in an internationally recognized scientific environment relative to the relevant career level (please see www.tum.de/en/faculty-recruiting-faq/ for further information), as well as be experienced in leading large research groups.

A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, are prerequisites. Substantial research experience abroad is expected.

The successful candidate’s interdisciplinary research will focus on state-of-the-art quantitative approaches (empirical or numerical). An ability and interest to leverage and analyze large datasets is desirable.

Our Offer

The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenured professor (generally a civil servant under public law) and immediately be granted leave to take over the position of co-lead of the CERES FutureLab at PIK until the end of 2031. The PIK position will be negotiated separately under private law (“Jülicher Modell”). Beginning in 2032, the professorship will be transformed into a regular TUM professorship, including a full teaching load.
