The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, brain diseases, environmental problems and climate change. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN's global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, sustainable cities and communities, and combating climate change.
The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and The department is responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department collaborates with various societal actors such as schools, business and authorities. The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology has around 200 employees. We are located in central premises both on Campus Johanneberg and on Campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.

The Westenhoff research group works to resolve structural dynamics of proteins and chemical reactions. We use femtosecond spectroscopy, time-resolved x-ray scattering and time-resolved crystallography. This position is placed in Westenhoff’s ERC-project MolStrycDyn

Job assignments.

You are expected to work with the following tasks: Production, purification and crystallization of phytochromes. Simple biophysical and biochemical characterization of the proteins. Design and planning of the project with special focus on optimizing the crystals and production of microcrystals. Strategic planning of the project, which may involve the choice of crystallization methods, choice of phytochrome variant, choice of purification methods.Time-resolved crystallography experiments at Free electorn laser sources on the samples. Planning, data acquisition, data analysis, close collaboration with Westenhoff's research team, especially those included in the ERC project as well as contribute towards fulfilling the goals of the ERC project MolStructDyn

Qualifications

To be employed as a researcher you must hold a Swedish doctorate or an equivalent foreign degree. We are looking for a person who has expertise to carry out the tasks listed above. We are looking for a person who has the ability to work independently in biochemical projects and who has driven one or perhaps several X-ray crystallography projects to success. Experience with time-resolved crystallography is a merit. The ability to work effectively in a group is also important.

Employment

Fixed term during  18 months, full time at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.
