Job Type: Research

Department: School of Medicine

Salary: £27924 to £34304 per annum, (pro rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £31406 with relevant PhD).

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate/Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary research team in Hearing Sciences, based at the NIHR Nottingham BRC. Hearing Sciences consists of research teams led by an internationally recognised group of senior scientists, with research that spans the full range of approaches from basic auditory neuroscience to applied clinical research. This particular post is funded by a collaborative NIHR Research for Patient Benefit award and will assess auditory-cognitive training interventions for first-time NHS hearing aid users, to inform the feasibility of a future NHS multicentre clinical effectiveness trial.

The successful candidate will have specific responsibility for the day-to-day management of the research project, which will include the recruitment of new NHS audiology patients across two sites (Mansfield and Nottingham). The postholder will be expected to plan and conduct work using approaches or methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research and, with support from the Principal Investigator, will be responsible for dissemination at key conferences and writing up the research for publication. The postholder will have opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify areas for new research, develop methodological and research skills, and extend their research portfolio within the scope of the NIHR Nottingham BRC remit. The NIHR Nottingham BRC benefits from high-quality purpose-designed testing facilities and established research links across the University of Nottingham and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. We also benefit from the support of dedicated staff, facilities and resources via the NIHR Clinical Research Facility and NIHR Clinical Research Network to help recruit to and deliver our clinical research studies.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline (or be near to completion for Associate level) and experience in research involving humans. Training and skills in quantitative research methods are essential. Experience of qualitative research methods is desirable. Candidates should have an excellent working knowledge of relevant IT operating systems and software packages (including Windows and Microsoft Office), a good working knowledge of how to interpret experimental data and be willing to travel between local research sites as required. Candidates should also possess good communication skills, demonstrating an ability to communicate on all levels within a multi-disciplinary team. Project management skills, attention to detail and excellent organisation and planning abilities are essential, along with good database skills and data management.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 13 months. The post is full-time (36.25 hours per week), however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Helen Henshaw, Senior Research Fellow on helen.henshaw@nottingham.ac.uk Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
