A postdoctoral researcher to join the Perception Engineering (PE) research group at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP).

The research group

The Perception Engineering (PE) group at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP) in the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) conducts research on immersive robotic telepresence at the confluence of robotics and virtual reality (https://ubicomp.oulu.fi/research/pe).

 The PE group studies fundamental challenges in such systems: how to automatically compensate for the motions of wide-angle and panoramic cameras, both real and virtual, so that user comfort is maximized, immersion or presence is preserved, and cybersickness is minimized. The PE group also seeks to develop human perception-based engineering criteria, to advance the scientific understanding of immersive robotic telepresence, and to benefit the larger industrial ecosystem.

 Open position

The position is fixed-term for 3 years, preferably from 01.01.2023 to 31.12.2025, but the starting date is negotiable. A trial period of 6 months is applied at the beginning of the employment. The initial research project is set for three years, with the aim to continue thereafter as a separate project, pending research funding”?

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to fundamental research efforts at the confluence of robotics and virtual reality.

Potential topics of research are flexible and are drawn from areas such as planning algorithms, reinforcement learning, applied computational geometry, control theory, human computer interaction, signal processing, sensor fusion, computer graphics, and human perception.

Motivating applications include robotic telepresence and tele-embodiment, comfortable and effective locomotion in virtual reality, and the promotion of well-being through wearable display technology.

Qualification requirements

We expect a doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field. The doctoral degree must have been received no more than 10 years ago. Doctoral candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis for review by August 31st, 2022 are eligible to apply.

In addition to a core background in robotics or virtual reality, experience in the following areas will be considered favorably: algorithms, applied mathematics, dynamical systems, control theory, filtering, motion planning, HCI, and perceptual psychology.

Fluency in both written and spoken English and excellent communication and teamwork skills are expected. Demonstrated experience in writing scientific publications, acquiring funding, and teaching are considered merits. When assessing the qualifications, aspects to be considered include expertise on the research field and methodology, scientific publications, supervision experience, and activity in the scientific community.

Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid annual holiday and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.

The employed person will be insured by the university and provided occupational healthcare. The Finnish government provides benefits to residents and their families, including high-quality and affordable public healthcare, childcare and school services.

Salary

The salary of a postdoctoral researcher will be level 5 at the Finnish university salary system for teaching and research personnel. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). In practice, starting gross salary will be approximately 3700-4000 € per month before taxes.

1)     A motivation letter (max. 2 pages) summarizing the applicant’s professional experience and expertise and interest in the position. Also, information on personal research interests, experience and career plans are valuable to provide here.

2)     Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages) in accordance with the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (https://tenk.fi/en/advice-and-materials/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae). 

3)     List of publications based on the guidelines of the Academy of Finland (https://www.aka.fi/en/research-funding/apply-for-funding/how-to-apply-for-funding/az-index-of-application-guidelines2/list-of-publications/)

4)     A research statement (max. 3 pages).

5)     Certificates/Diplomas, a scanned copy of the original doctoral degree certificate, together with an official translation to Finnish or English.

6)     Contact information of two senior/experienced researchers who may be asked to give a statement on the candidate.
