We are looking for a Doctoral student to join the Crypto Team and  Security Group at Chalmers with Christoph Egger as main  supervisor. The Crypto Team currently has 2 faculty members one Post-DOc and 5 Doctoral students and is embedded in the security group that captures a wide range of topics.

Computing Science 

At the division of Computing Science, we advance secure and trustworthy software and systems, spanning foundations, programming languages, tools and practical methods that help shape dependable digital infrastructures. 

About the research project  

Depending on the interests of the applicant, possible research topics include fine-grained and bounded space cryptography, realization of idealized models, relationship between cryptographic notions, and similar topics in foundational cryptography. Similarly work on the intersection of cryptographic protocols and formal methods is possible. One or two extended research visits are encouraged during the doctoral study. 

Applicants should have a strong interest in the mathematical analysis of algorithms in general and cryptography in particular. A master's degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline is required. The working language in the department is English, and applicants are expected to be fluent both in written and spoken English. Swedish courses are available for interested students. 

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field of study 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English 
  • Mathematical Maturity: The candidate is expected to be comfortable reading and writing proofs and formal definitions.
  • Personal competences in accordance with the requirements profile including specification (e.g. social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others) 

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. 

The following experience will strengthen your application: 

  • Experience in Cryptography, Probability Theory, Complexity Theory and Formal Methods  

What you will do

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Xxxxx (länk till specifik graduate school Graduate schools | Chalmers ) 
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing 
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms  

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. 
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years. 
  • A starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). 
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
