Join us for an exciting postdoctoral position to shape the future of data-driven product realisation in close collaboration with leading Swedish industry.

About us

At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we unite the power of technology, people, and society to drive the transition toward a sustainable future. Through research, education, and collaboration, we create solutions that connect materials to mobility, ideas to impact – shaping a resilient and sustainable world. We make impact.

The Division of Product Development conducts research and education across the entire product development lifecycle, from early concepts to industrialization. Together with industry, we develop methods and tools that enable robust, sustainable products while improving design decisions, reducing risk, and ensuring product quality.

The position may also be hosted within the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering, depending on the candidate’s profile and selected research track.

About the research project

DRIVE PR – Data-Driven Product Realisation is a large collaborative research initiative at Chalmers University of Technology and the Wingquist Laboratory. The project brings together leading industrial and academic partners to transform product realisation from data-enabled to truly data-driven practices.

The advertised position will mainly be connected to DRIVE PR, but may also be linked to related projects within data-driven product realisation, digital engineering, systems engineering, geometry assurance, automation, or model-based development.

The project addresses how advanced digital infrastructure can be used to reduce uncertainty, risk and variation in industrial product realisation. It connects engineering design, AI, digital twins, simulation, manufacturing systems, 5G/6G, decision support and real industrial demonstrators. The overall ambition is to demonstrate significant reductions in costs arising from uncertainty, risk and variation compared with a 2026 baseline.

The position will be hosted mainly in one of three Chalmers research environments: Geometry Assurance & Robust Design, Systems Engineering Design, or Automation. The exact placement will depend on the candidate’s profile and selected DRIVE PR research track. Together, these environments cover geometry assurance, robust design, systems engineering, product development methods, automation, autonomous systems and industrial digitalisation.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, production engineering, automation, systems engineering, computer science, applied AI, data science, industrial digitalisation, communication systems, simulation, optimisation, or another relevant field or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong analytical ability and independence.
  • Collaborative skills and ability to work across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Interest in both scientific development and industrial application.
  • Ability to contribute actively to an interdisciplinary research environment.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • industrial product development or manufacturing research
  • modelling and simulation, digital twins or digital threads
  • AI, machine learning, synthetic data or data-driven decision support
  • uncertainty quantification, robustness, variation simulation or tolerancing
  • CAD/CAE integration, geometry assurance or quality data
  • automation, control, 5G/6G, edge/cloud architectures or industrial digital infrastructure
  • model-based systems engineering or system-of-systems design
  • interdisciplinary collaboration with industrial partners
  • scientific publication in relevant international journals or conferences
  • knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit

It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.

What you will do

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to one or several DRIVE PR research tracks. You will work closely with industrial partners, PhD students, senior researchers and solution providers to develop, integrate and validate methods in realistic industrial contexts.

Depending on the final research profile, the position may also contribute to related projects, such as initiatives on model-based systems engineering in aircraft engine systems development.

Possible research directions include:

  • data-driven geometry assurance, tolerancing and variation simulation
  • automated generation and annotation of simulation models from CAD, inspection and lifecycle data
  • digital twins and digital threads for engineering, manufacturing, repair and remanufacturing
  • data-driven robustness and uncertainty-aware decision support
  • hybrid modelling combining physics-based simulation, scarce data and AI methods
  • synthetic data generation and surrogate modelling for product realisation
  • model-based systems engineering and system-of-systems design
  • digital infrastructure for connected engineering, automation and industrial decision support
  • human-in-the-loop approaches for trustworthy AI-supported engineering decisions

The work may include:

  • method development
  • industrial case studies
  • demonstrator development
