PhD Position in Toxicology

We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join our team, with a start date in late 2026 or early 2027.

The Laboratory of Toxicology in the ETH at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology is looking for a new PhD student with a focus on genomic biomarkers of health and disease.

We strive to understand biochemical and cellular mechanisms governing bioactive properties of chemicals in order to promote food, drug and personal care product function and safety. Researchers develop and apply quantitative chemical, in vitro, and computational approaches to address problems in Toxicology.

Project background

We develop and apply bioanalysis approaches to map DNA damage at single-base resolution. Building on these newly established tools, we integrate complementary multi-omic approaches to characterize DNA damage in the context of genome organization and function. Through application of these methods to clinically relevant biological material, we aim to mechanistically dissect the role of DNA damage in aging and disease.

Job description

A PhD position is available concerning UV-induced skin aging and enabling biomarker technologies for prevention. The group addresses mechanisms of genome instability of diverse physical and chemical exposures, such as from the environment, lifestyle factors and drugs, as well as cellular metabolism and oxidative stress. In this PhD project, you will expand this research to uncover biomarkers of aging, a process driven by DNA damage. You will use DNA sequencing and related methods to characterize cellular responses to stress and following interventions. Using bioinformatics, these data will be integrated with characteristics such as gene expression and DNA methylation.

Profile

A successful applicant will have, or expect to obtain before starting, an MSc or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Science, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline. Good written and oral communication skills in English are needed. The individual should have a self-dependent mindset, good leadership qualities, and a strong foundation of practical relevant laboratory experience. Bioinformatics skills are beneficial but can be expanded during the PhD. Students who excel in the chemical biology of nucleic acids, genomic sequencing, in vitro toxicology, or related topics are particularly encouraged to apply.
