YOUR TASKS

The research project Copying as Common Practice in Early Modern Architecture – funded by the European Research Council and directed by Elizabeth Merrill (PI) – is inviting applications for a full-time post-doctoral researcher from the field of early modern art history. The term for this position is 1 year initially but can be extended for an additional year based on positive evaluation.

Working extensively with special collections and archives in Europe and the UK, the Post-Doc will identify examples of architectural tracing produced in the early modern period, and develop a catalogue of the surviving drawings. The research aims to better understand how traced drawings were produced and the functions they filled. The project will make a fundamental methodological advancement in its use of techniques and tools of technical art history, which until now have been largely excluded from the study of architectural drawings.

The ideal candidate is a motivated, independent scholar who is able to assume leadership roles. The Post-Doc will be responsible for executing archival-based research on drawings and methodologically cataloguing the research findings. The Post-Doc will have the opportunity to pursue training in the study of drawings, and will be encouraged to partake in research seminars, international conferences and workshops.  Experience with digital humanities is not a requirement, but is an asset. Prospective candidates must be interested in the possibilities and methods of digital humanities and online databases.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Ph.D. in the field of early modern art and architectural history, with an established expertise in the study of drawings.
  • You have expertise manuscript studies and codicology.
  • You have general IT skills (Word, Microsoft Drive, etc.)
  • You work well in collaboration with others and respect internal deadlines.
  • You are able and willing to travel.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period of 12 months.
  • Your contract will start on 10/01/2026 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale  PD1 to PD4.  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
