We are looking for 12 Postdoctoral Research Fellows in the field of next-generation semiconductor technologies. The full-time positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 years and are connected to Tampere University’s FutureChips Postdoctoral Programme and focus on fundamental technology and methods development for next-generation semiconductor technologies. 

The programme’s four interconnected semiconductor research areas are: 

  1. Advanced compound materials and heterostructures 
  2. Novel architectures 
  3. Chip design 
  4. Advanced packaging

The positions will be located in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences or in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences

Job description 

The successful candidate will design, coordinate and implement their own research and publish results in high-impact venues. 

Research scope 

The postdoctoral research fellow will develop semiconductor technologies and the relevant knowledge base. 

Research environment and infrastructure 

Tampere University offers an excellent environment for semiconductor integration research, including strong capabilities spanning photonics, chip-level fabrication, advanced packaging, and system-level demonstrators. Tampere University has excellent micro- and nanofabrication facilities available for research and industrial R&D work. Researchers will have access to the System-in-Package Fabrication SiPFAB as a key infrastructure platform for heterogeneous System-in-Package-oriented research and packaging process development, complemented by Tampere University’s broader semiconductor fabrication and characterization infrastructure.

Requirements 

Applicants must: 

  • have a doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g. future electronics, electrical engineering, photonics, micro- and nanotechnology, semiconductor physics, advanced materials, or chip design) by the application deadline of 31 August 2026. Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis by 31 August 2026, but who have not yet formally been awarded the degree are also eligible to apply. In such cases, the applicant must provide confirmation that the doctoral degree will be awarded at the latest upon starting the employment. 
  • have the ability to pursue independent scholarly activity. 
  • have not resided or carried out their main activity (e.g. work, studies) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately preceding the application deadline (31 August 2026). 
  • have fluent spoken and written English skills.

The applicant will be evaluated based on: 

  • the applicant’s academic merits and demonstrated excellence, 
  • the quality and scientific excellence of the research proposal, 
  • the feasibility, impact, and implementation of the research proposal, 
  • the scientific relevance and significance of the proposed research topic, 
  • communication and dissemination skills.

According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff under the Finnish University Salary System, the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on level 5-6 of the job requirements scale. The salary will be 4500 euros (€) before taxation.

  • Research Plan Abstract (maximum 2,500 characters excluding spaces using the provided template, no listing of references) 
  • Research Plan within any of the four research areas of FutureChips, including considerations of ethical issues and references (maximum 25,000 characters excluding spaces using the provided template).  
  • Curriculum Vitae according to TENK guidelines (maximum 2 pages).     
  • List of publications according to Research Council of Finland guidelines. Please indicate your five most important publications and add a link to those. Non-English titles must be translated into English. 
  • Ethics self-assessment 
  • Motivation letter addressing career plans and consideration of the benefits of international and inter-sectorial mobility (secondments / research visits) (maximum 1 page).
