Post-doc Position Advanced Electrochemical Processing of Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors

TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. At the Institute of Sensor and Actuator Systems, in the Research Unit of Microsystems Technology, TU Wien is offering a position as project assistant (post-doc position) limited to 1 year for 40 hours/week—expected start: January 2027. This position is within a long-term research project, and a subsequent extension by another 2 years is possible.

Tasks

  • Conduct application-oriented fundamental research on advanced semiconductorprocessing technologies with a focus on electrochemical processing and correspondinghigh-temperature treatments of wide-bandgap semiconductors, particularly siliconcarbide (SiC).
  • Develop and optimise electrochemical processes, including porous SiC formation,electrochemical polishing, electrochemical oxidation, and related semiconductorsurface engineering techniques.
  • Investigate the fundamental mechanisms governing electrochemical reactions, poreformation, surface modification, and semiconductor dissolution using experimentaland simulation-based approaches.
  • Explore high-temperature treatment strategies for porous semiconductor materials,including reorganisation processes, surface diffusion, condensation/evaporationphenomena, and microstructure evolution.
  • Design, fabricate, and characterise novel semiconductor structures and demonstratetheir potential for future MEMS and power electronic devices.
  • Plan, perform, and independently evaluate experimental investigations usingadvanced materials characterization and semiconductor processing techniques.
  • Publish research results in leading international peer-reviewed journals and presentfindings at international conferences.
  • Co-supervise PhD students and Master’s students and contribute to the coordinationof research activities within the project team.
  • Collaborate closely with national and international research and industrial partners.
  • Contribute to the development of new research ideas and future collaborativeresearch proposals.

Your Profile

Required qualifications

  • PhD or comparable degree in physics, electrical engineering, material science,chemistry or in a comparable field
  • Expertise in structural and chemical analysis of wide band gap semiconductors (e.g.SiC)
  • Deep interest in scientific problems and the motivation for independent and target-oriented research
  • Ability to develop methods, concepts, as well as their realization and evaluation andthe willingness to contribute to an interdisciplinary scientific project
  • Organizational and analytical skills as well as a structured way of working
  • Solid written and oral communication skills in English

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with electrochemical processing of semiconductors or related materials isregarded as a strong plus.
  • A background in surface diffusion mechanisms is regarded as a strong plus
  • Experience with high-temperature materials processing and microstructuralevolution is a strong plus.
  • Knowledge micro- and nanofabrication and/or thin film deposition/analysis isbeneficial.
  • Expertise in modelling and simulation of complex physical phenomena andelectrochemical processes is considered an advantage.
  • Experience in supervising students or mentoring junior researchers is beneficial.
  • Experience in collaborating within interdisciplinary or international research projectsis an asset.
