The Department of Experimental Physics I (Physics of living matter) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany invites applications for a

PhD position (f/m/d)

to be commenced in summer/fall 2026 (flexible starting date, fixed-term contract of initially four years, salary according to TV-L). The topic of the thesis will be embedded in ongoing projects on the physics of cell migration and intracellular transport. In general, our research is focused on elucidating and quantifying physico-chemical principles of dynamic self-organization and transport processes in soft and living matter on different length and time scales. This includes, for example, anomalous diffusion processes in crowded media far away from thermal equilibrium, the formation and homeostasis of cellular organelles, or the dynamic self-organization of cells on structured substrates and during embryogenesis. To this end, we mainly employ advanced light microscopy methods (e.g. partially custom-made lightsheet, spinning-disk, STED setups) and microfluidics, complemented by custom-made software tools for analysis and simulation (see also www.ep1.uni-bayreuth.de/en/research).

Candidates should have a strong interest in topical scientific questions at the interface of the natural and life sciences, which is supported on-site by an interdisciplinary PhD program (BayNAT). A university degree (Master or equivalent) in Physics, Biophysics, Physical Chemistry, Optical Engineering, or Cell/Molecular Biology (with additional qualifications in Physics) is required. Commitment, team spirit, curiosity, and the ability to work in an independent and structured manner are expected. In turn, you will experience a constructive, stimulating, and friendly working atmosphere in an open-minded and international team.

The position is limited according to the German Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (fixed-term contract law for academic staff) and is intended for personal academic qualification (doctorate). The duration of the employment relationship depends on both, legal and personal conditions. Furthermore, the employment conditions of the Bavarian Higher Education and Research Act (BayHIG) apply as hiring requirements.

The University of Bayreuth appreciates the diversity of its employees and is explicitly committed to the goal of equal opportunities for men and women. Women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if they are equally qualified.

Please send inquiries and meaningful applications (CV, a brief motivation letter and the names of at least two persons to provide a reference) at the earliest convenience (applications will be evaluated continuously for interviews) but no later than Aug 01, 2026 to: [email protected]
