Department of Chemistry is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work in a project aiming for a breakthrough in peripheral neuroprosthetics.

The position is funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko foundation (Project GIN2) and is a fixed-term contract from October 1 or as soon as possible to 2026 to July 31, 2028.

The post-doc researcher will work in a highly multidisciplinary and international team consisting of chemists, biologists, physicists, engineers and surgeons at two universities (JYU, University of Jyväskylä and TAU, Tampere University). The immediate supervisors are Professor Mika Pettersson and Dr. Andreas Johansson at the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience Center (JYU). The project deals with the development of a novel nerve-machine interface built from graphene field effect transistor devices on flexible substrates. The specific task of the position is to design and fabricate an implantable device for bidirectional signal transmission (measurement and stimulation) to be used in animal model experiments. The work is based on previous development on materials, devices and cell experiments within this project and it is supported by the whole multidisciplinary team. The high-quality graphene used in the project is produced in-house by a dedicated engineer. The work is to be considered high risk high gain and requires suitable attitude and commitment.

Who should apply

We are looking for enthusiastic and hardworking candidate who matches the following requirements:

  • PhD in a suitable field
  • Previous experience in micro- and nanofabrication techniques (e-beam / optical lithography and associated techniques) is required
  • Knowledge /experience in as many as possible of the following areas / techniques is considered an advantage:
    • electronic transport measurements,
    • electronic circuit design
    • characterization techniques (Raman microscopy, AFM, SEM, etc.)
    • neuroscience
    • biological/in-vivo sensors
  • Experience in collaboration with biologists or medical researchers is an advantage
  • Prerequisites for the position include thorough working methods, team player attitude, and the ability to work with good level of independence
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are required

The selected person is also expected to actively participate in group meetings and undergraduate / graduate students’ supervision and participate in teaching.

The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before the starting date. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. The salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 5–6 for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 3600-4800 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. If you are relocating from abroad, we will support your move to Jyväskylä and Finland.

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is internationally renowned for its high-quality research and teaching.
