2 - Position description

The Faculteit Psychologie & Educatiewetenschappen, Department Psychologie, Research Group No Large Research Group is looking for a PhD-student with a doctoral grant. 

More concretely your work package, for the preparation of a doctorate, contains: 

Het doctoraatsproject zal zich in hoofdzaak richten op de ontwikkeling, validatie en implementatie van het Psychological Referral Optimization algorithm (PRO). PRO is een korte digitale e-screeningtool die vroege detectie, risicostratificatie, getrapte triage en doorverwijzing bij adolescenten en jongvolwassenen ondersteunt. Afhankelijk van het finale onderzoeksplan en jouw profiel kan het doctoraat één of meerdere van de volgende thema’s omvatten: longitudinale risico- en veerkrachtmechanismen voor psychische problemen en zelfbeschadiging; validatie en verfijning van PRO-risicogroepen; integratie van PRO met persoonsgerichte assessment en interventietoewijzing via PECAN (i.e., gepersonaliseerde probleemnetwerken); evaluatie van digitale preventiepaden; procedures voor getrapte triage en doorverwijzing; implementatie van PRO in schoolse, jeugd- en klinische contexten; en ethische en veiligheidsprocedures binnen digitaal onderzoek naar mentale gezondheid bij jongeren.

Een selectie van jouw taken:

• Je draagt bij aan de Belgische uitrol van de SAMPO-cohort- en trialinfrastructuur, inclusief rekrutering, contacten met scholen en partnerorganisaties, opvolging van deelnemers en dataverzameling;
• Je ondersteunt de implementatie, validatie en verfijning van het Psychological Referral Optimization algorithm (PRO) als korte digitale e-screeningtool voor vroege detectie, risicostratificatie, getrapte triage en doorverwijzing van adolescenten en jongvolwassenen;
• Je voert kwantitatieve analyses uit van longitudinale en psychometrische data, met mogelijk gebruik van predictiemodellen, mediatie- en moderatieanalyses, persoonsgerichte benaderingen, netwerkanalyses of andere geavanceerde statistische methoden, afhankelijk van de finale focus van het doctoraat;
• Je bereidt wetenschappelijke publicaties, conferentiepresentaties, preregistraties, rapporten en projectdeliverables voor die verband houden met het doctoraat, met bijzondere aandacht voor PRO-gebaseerde screening, optimalisatie van doorverwijzing en preventie binnen de mentale gezondheidszorg voor jongeren;
• Je draagt bij aan participatieve co-designactiviteiten met jongeren en stakeholders, en ondersteunt disseminatie naar scholen, jeugdhulp, klinische diensten, beleidsactoren en het brede publiek;
• Je werkt constructief samen met internationale consortiumpartners, het VUB-onderzoeksteam, doctoraats- en masterstudenten, technische partners en relevante klinische en maatschappelijke stakeholders;

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base. 

3 - Profile

What do we expect from you?

• Je hebt een masterdiploma in de klinische psychologie, ontwikkelingspsychologie, pedagogische wetenschappen, public health, psychiatrie, data science, gezondheidswetenschappen of een nauw verwante discipline, of je behaalt dit diploma voor de start van de aanstelling. 

• • Je hebt een sterke interesse in mentale gezondheid bij adolescenten en jongvolwassenen, preventie, zelfbeschadigend gedrag, suïcidepreventie, digitale mentale gezondheid of gepersonaliseerde interventies;
  • Je beschikt over goede methodologische en kwantitatieve onderzoeksvaardigheden en bent bereid om je statistische expertise verder te verdiepen. Ervaring met R, Mplus, SPSS, Python of vergelijkbare software is een troef;
  • Je hebt aandacht voor ethiek, safeguarding, vertrouwelijkheid en proportioneel risicobeheer in onderzoek met adolescenten en kwetsbare groepen;
  • Je communiceert helder en professioneel met deelnemers, scholen, jeugdorganisaties, klinische partners en internationale onderzoekers;
  • Je beschikt over uitstekende schriftelijke en mondelinge vaardigheden in het Engels. Een goede kennis van het Nederlands is belangrijk voor het werk met lokale scholen en deelnemers; bereidheid om Nederlands verder te versterken wordt gewaardeerd. Kennis van Frans of andere consortiumtalen is een troef;
  • Je bent georganiseerd, betrouwbaar, proactief en kan zelfstandig werken binnen een collaboratief onderzoeksteam;
  • Ervaring met klinische gesprekvoering, jongerenwelzijn, schoolgebonden onderzoek, digitale interventies, RCTs, geavanceerde kwantitatieve data-analyses of longitudinale dataverzameling is een pluspunt;

• You have not performed any works in the execution of a mandate as an assistant, paid from operating resources, over a total (cumulated) period of more than 12 months.

4 - Offer

Are you going to be our new colleague?

You’ll be offered a full-time PhD-scholarship, for 12 months (extendable up to max. 48 months, on condition of the positive evaluation of the PhD activities), with planned starting date 01/10/2026. 

You’ll receive a grant linked to one of the scales set by the government.

IMPORTANT: The effective result of the doctorate scholarship is subject to the condition precedent of your enrolment as a doctorate student at the university.
