Silesian University of Technology

The Silesian University of Technology is the oldest technical university in Upper Silesia and one of the largest in the country. It was established in 1945 as a scientific and teaching base for the most industrialized district in Poland and at the same time one of the most industrialized areas in Europe - Upper Silesia. It is an important institution of public life and plays a special culture-forming and opinion-forming role in the region.

The Mission of the University

The mission of the Silesian University of Technology, as a prestigious European university of technology, is to conduct innovative research and development work, educate highly qualified staff for the knowledge-based society and economy, as well as actively influence the development of the region and local communities. The university, through continuous improvement of processes and organization, is a friendly and open place of work and development of the academic community.

Research university

The Silesian University of Technology is the only university in Silesia to be included in the prestigious group of 10 Polish universities, winners of the "Excellence Initiative - Research University" competition of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The aim of the project was to select and support universities that will strive to achieve the status of a research university and will be able to effectively compete with the best academic centres in Europe and the world. Of the twenty best universities in Poland eligible to participate in the competition, an international team of experts selected ten that will receive a subsidy increased by 10% in the years 2020-2026. This group included the Silesian University of Technology, which will receive a total of nearly PLN 245,000,000.00 over 7 years as part of the competition.

The main goals of the development plan of the Silesian University of Technology under IDUB are:

• increasing the impact of the University's scientific activities on the development of global science,
• strengthening research cooperation with leading international research centres with a high reputation,
• improving the quality of education for students and doctoral students through the development of modern methods and double diploma programs,
• improving HR policy,
• improving the quality of University management.

European University EURECA-PRO

The Silesian University of Technology creates it together with nine leading universities from the European Union. These nine partners have joined forces to enable students and staff to study, teach, research and collaborate in all fields, with the long-term goal of a common virtual and integrated European campus by 2040. This innovative initiative by renowned universities aims to strengthen environmental protection in general, especially through responsible production and consumption and high-quality education.

Science and education

The fourteen units – thirteen faculties and one institute of the Silesian University of Technology – currently offer nearly 60 fields of study, covering the entire scope of engineering activities. In addition to technical fields, at the university students can also study business analytics, interior design, mathematics, management, project management, and applied linguistics. Nine faculties and the Institute of Physics are located in Gliwice, two faculties operate in Katowice and two in Zabrze, thanks to which the Silesian University of Technology covers a large area of the Silesian Voivodeship with its scientific and didactic influence.

Currently, the Silesian University of Technology educates over 15,600 students. The university offers first-cycle studies (engineering and bachelor's degrees), second-cycle - master's studies, education at the doctoral school called "Joint Doctoral School" and postgraduate studies. Studies are conducted both in full-time and part-time modes. Candidates also have the opportunity to undertake free education in one of almost 30 fields of study in English.

So far, the Silesian University of Technology has promoted over 220,000. engineers. University graduates often hold managerial and directorial positions and high positions in industrial corporations.

A rich teaching offer and high quality of education have made the Silesian University of Technology one of the top Polish technical universities for years, as evidenced by high places in university rankings. The University confirms its strong position with the scientific and teaching achievements of outstanding specialists and numerous successes on a national and international scale. Studies at the Silesian University of Technology are an opportunity to cooperate with many companies that are willing to employ university graduates. According to the Perspektywy 2024 Ranking of Universities, it is the best academic university in Silesia. The Technical Studies Ranking assessed twenty-two fields of study, of which the Silesian University of Technology was on the podium on a national scale in as many as seven of them.
