Interested in developing statistical methods for large spatial datasets? Join as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the project DIVSPOT to develop new methods for large, heterogeneous point patterns, with applications in forest science and spatial biology.

Job description

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Research Council of Finland funded DIVSPOTproject on methodological developments in spatial statistics, with a focus on large-scale point pattern data. The work combines theoretical statistics, computational methods, and real-world applications in forestry and spatial biology.

Main responsibilities include:

- developing local diversity characteristics for heterogeneous spatial point patterns

- designing statistically rigorous methods for hotspot detection

- implementing computationally efficient algorithms for large-scale datasets (millions of observations)

- conducting simulation studies and analyzing large datasets - applying methods to:

• remote sensing-based forestry data

• cell-level medical imaging data

- contributing to software development (R and/or Python)

- publishing scientific articles and presenting results at international conferences

The researcher will work in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with international partners, including University of Helsinki, Karolinska Institute and EPFL.

What we offer to you:

- an opportunity to work in a high-level Academy of Finland research project

- access to unique large-scale datasets in forestry and spatial biology

- strong international collaboration network

- modern research infrastructure at Luke and access to CSC computing resources - a supportive and collaborative research environment

Our expectations of the applicant

  • - a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant field, such as statistics, data science or applied mathematics - strong expertise in spatial statistics - solid programming skills (especially R; Python is an advantage) - experience with computational or simulation-based methods - ability to conduct independent research and produce high-quality scientific writing - excellent written and spoken English - willingness to collaborate internationally and visit partner institutes We consider it an advantage if the candidate has: - experience with spatial processes or spatial point pattern analysis - experience working with large datasets - a publication track record in peer-reviewed journals, especially in statistics, spatial point pattern analysis, and forestry or spatial biology applications - Interest or experience in:
  • ecological or forest applications
  • spatial biology or bioinformatics

- experience with Monte Carlo or resampling methods - Finnish language skills - good team working, communication and writing skills
